Vernier Micrometer

A vernier micrometer is a precision measuring instrument used to measure very small dimensions with high accuracy. It is an improved version of the ordinary micrometer and includes a vernier scale for more precise readings.

Material

Vernier micrometers are usually made from hardened steel or stainless steel to ensure durability, wear resistance, and high accuracy.

Main Parts of Vernier Micrometer

  • Frame: The C-shaped body that supports the instrument.
  • Anvil: The fixed measuring surface.
  • Spindle: The movable measuring surface.
  • Sleeve (Barrel): Contains the main scale.
  • Thimble: Rotates to move the spindle.
  • Vernier Scale: Provides more accurate measurement.
  • Ratchet Stop: Ensures uniform measuring pressure.
  • Lock Nut: Used to lock the spindle in position.

Graduation

The sleeve carries the main scale marked in millimeters, while the thimble has circular graduations. The vernier scale allows readings up to 0.001 mm for highly accurate measurements.

Uses

  • Measuring very small external dimensions.
  • Precision inspection work.
  • Measuring thickness of thin materials.

Care and Maintenance

  • Keep the measuring faces clean.
  • Avoid dropping the instrument.
  • Store in a protective case.
  • Apply light oil to prevent rust.

Calibration is the process of comparing a measuring instrument with a standard reference instrument to ensure its accuracy. Calibration helps maintain reliable measurement results.

Construction

The screw thread micrometer is similar to an ordinary micrometer but has special anvils and spindles designed to fit the shape of screw threads.

Graduation
