ITI Fitter
Fitter

ITI Fitter is a 2-year technical vocational course (CTS) focusing on fitting, assembling, and maintaining industrial machinery and metal parts. It covers trade theory (safety, tools, machinery, engineering drawing) and practical training (filing, drilling, turning), leading to a recognized National Trade Certificate (NTC)

Key Aspects of ITI Fitter:

  • Course Structure: Two-year, often split into four semesters, covering both theoretical and practical modules.
  • Core Skills: Students learn to use tools like lathes, drills, grinders, and precision measuring instruments (micrometres, verniers).
  • Job Roles: Upon completion, graduates can work as technicians, machine assemblers, pipe fitters, or structural fitters in manufacturing plants, public sector units (PSUs), or private industries.
  • Career Scope: High demand in manufacturing, automotive, heavy engineering, and maintenance departments.

Key Subjects Covered:

  • Safety Practices: Workshop safety and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Fitting Techniques: Precision fitting, assembly, and maintenance.
  • Engineering Drawing: Interpreting mechanical drawings.
  • Trade Theory: Knowledge of metals, tools, and machining processes.

Dial Test Indicator

A dial test indicator (DTI) is a precision measuring instrument used to measure small linear distances and detect slight variations in dimensions. It is commonly used in engineering workshops and inspection departments for checking alignment, flatness, roundness, and run-out of machine components.

Material

The body of the dial test indicator is usually made from hardened steel or alloy steel for durability and accuracy. The internal parts such as gears and springs are made from precision-engineered materials to ensure smooth operation.

Construction

The dial test indicator consists of a circular dial with a pointer connected to a plunger or contact point. When the contact point touches the surface of the workpiece, it moves slightly and the movement is transmitted through gears to the dial pointer, indicating the measurement.

Main Parts

  • Dial face
  • Pointer or needle
  • Plunger or contact point
  • Dial casing
  • Stem
  • Gear mechanism
  • Mounting clamp

Graduation

The dial is graduated into small divisions, usually 0.01 mm or 0.001 inch depending on the instrument type. The pointer moves across the dial to indicate the displacement.

Method of Use

  1. Mount the dial test indicator on a magnetic stand or fixture.
  2. Bring the contact point in contact with the workpiece.
  3. Set the dial pointer to zero.
  4. Move the workpiece or instrument slightly.
  5. Observe the pointer movement to measure variation.

Care and Maintenance

  • Handle the instrument carefully to avoid damage.
  • Keep the contact point clean.
  • Avoid sudden shocks or dropping the instrument.
  • Store the instrument in a protective case.
  • Periodically calibrate the instrument.

Digital Dial Indicator

A digital dial indicator is an advanced version of the mechanical dial indicator. Instead of a pointer and dial, it displays measurements on a digital screen.

Features

  • Digital LCD display for easy reading.
  • High accuracy measurement.
  • Zero-setting option.
  • Metric and inch conversion.
  • Data output capability.

Advantages

  • Easy and quick measurement.
  • Reduced reading errors.
  • High precision.

Comparators

A comparator is a precision measuring instrument used to compare the dimensions of a workpiece with a standard reference. Instead of measuring actual size, it indicates the deviation from the standard size.

Types of Comparators

  • Mechanical comparator
  • Optical comparator
  • Pneumatic comparator
  • Electronic comparator

Uses

  • Checking dimensional accuracy.
  • Quality control in mass production.
  • Comparing parts with standard sizes.

Measurement of Quality in Cylinder Bores

Cylinder bores are critical components in engines and mechanical systems. Accurate measurement of cylinder bores is important to ensure proper functioning and efficiency.

Methods Used

  • Dial bore gauge
  • Internal micrometer
  • Comparator system

Purpose of Measuring Cylinder Bores

  • Checking bore diameter.
  • Detecting taper or out-of-roundness.
  • Ensuring correct piston clearance.
  • Maintaining engine performance.

Procedure

  1. Clean the cylinder bore.
  2. Insert the measuring instrument into the bore.
  3. Measure at different positions along the bore.
  4. Compare readings with standard specifications.

Conclusion

Dial test indicators, digital dial indicators, and comparators are important precision measuring instruments used in engineering inspection and quality control. They help detect small dimensional variations and ensure accuracy in manufacturing processes, including critical measurements such as cylinder bores.
