ITI Fitter
Fitter

ITI Fitter is a 2-year technical vocational course (CTS) focusing on fitting, assembling, and maintaining industrial machinery and metal parts. It covers trade theory (safety, tools, machinery, engineering drawing) and practical training (filing, drilling, turning), leading to a recognized National Trade Certificate (NTC)

Key Aspects of ITI Fitter:

  • Course Structure: Two-year, often split into four semesters, covering both theoretical and practical modules.
  • Core Skills: Students learn to use tools like lathes, drills, grinders, and precision measuring instruments (micrometres, verniers).
  • Job Roles: Upon completion, graduates can work as technicians, machine assemblers, pipe fitters, or structural fitters in manufacturing plants, public sector units (PSUs), or private industries.
  • Career Scope: High demand in manufacturing, automotive, heavy engineering, and maintenance departments.

Key Subjects Covered:

  • Safety Practices: Workshop safety and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Fitting Techniques: Precision fitting, assembly, and maintenance.
  • Engineering Drawing: Interpreting mechanical drawings.
  • Trade Theory: Knowledge of metals, tools, and machining processes.

Bearings

Introduction

A bearing is a mechanical component used to support and guide rotating or moving machine parts. Bearings reduce friction between moving surfaces and allow smooth rotation of shafts or other components. They are widely used in machines such as motors, gearboxes, pumps, and vehicles.

Functions of Bearings

  • Support rotating shafts.
  • Reduce friction between moving parts.
  • Carry radial and axial loads.
  • Ensure smooth and efficient motion.

Classification of Bearings

Bearings are generally classified into two main types based on the direction of load they support.

  • Journal Bearings
  • Thrust Bearings

Journal Bearings

A journal bearing supports loads acting perpendicular to the shaft axis. These loads are called radial loads. The shaft rotates inside the bearing surface and lubrication is used to reduce friction.

Description

  • Supports radial loads.
  • The shaft rotates inside the bearing surface.
  • Requires lubrication to reduce wear.

Applications

  • Engine crankshafts
  • Machine tool spindles
  • Electric motors

Thrust Bearings

A thrust bearing supports loads acting parallel to the shaft axis. These loads are called axial loads. Thrust bearings are used where axial movement must be controlled.

Description

  • Supports axial loads.
  • Designed to handle forces along the shaft axis.
  • Often used with other bearing types.

Applications

  • Automobile transmissions
  • Propeller shafts
  • Machine tool assemblies

Ball Bearings

Ball bearings are rolling element bearings that use small steel balls between the inner and outer races to reduce friction. They are widely used because they provide smooth operation and require less maintenance.

Single Row Ball Bearing

A single row ball bearing contains one row of balls placed between the inner and outer rings.

Description

  • Simple construction.
  • Supports moderate radial and axial loads.
  • Suitable for high-speed applications.

Applications

  • Electric motors
  • Pumps
  • Machine tools

Double Row Ball Bearing

A double row ball bearing contains two rows of balls arranged side by side. It can support heavier loads compared to a single row bearing.

Description

  • Two rows of rolling balls.
  • Higher load carrying capacity.
  • Better stability and rigidity.

Advantages of Double Row Ball Bearing

  • Higher load capacity.
  • Better support for radial and axial loads.
  • Greater rigidity and stability.
  • Longer service life.

Conclusion

Bearings are essential components in mechanical systems that support moving parts and reduce friction. Journal and thrust bearings handle radial and axial loads respectively, while ball bearings provide smooth and efficient motion. Double row ball bearings offer higher load capacity and improved stability compared to single row bearings.
