ITI Fitter
Fitter

ITI Fitter is a 2-year technical vocational course (CTS) focusing on fitting, assembling, and maintaining industrial machinery and metal parts. It covers trade theory (safety, tools, machinery, engineering drawing) and practical training (filing, drilling, turning), leading to a recognized National Trade Certificate (NTC)

Key Aspects of ITI Fitter:

  • Course Structure: Two-year, often split into four semesters, covering both theoretical and practical modules.
  • Core Skills: Students learn to use tools like lathes, drills, grinders, and precision measuring instruments (micrometres, verniers).
  • Job Roles: Upon completion, graduates can work as technicians, machine assemblers, pipe fitters, or structural fitters in manufacturing plants, public sector units (PSUs), or private industries.
  • Career Scope: High demand in manufacturing, automotive, heavy engineering, and maintenance departments.

Key Subjects Covered:

  • Safety Practices: Workshop safety and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Fitting Techniques: Precision fitting, assembly, and maintenance.
  • Engineering Drawing: Interpreting mechanical drawings.
  • Trade Theory: Knowledge of metals, tools, and machining processes.

Method of Fixing Geared Wheels

Geared wheels are mounted on shafts to transmit power and motion between different machine components. Proper fixing of gears ensures efficient power transmission and prevents slipping between the gear and shaft.

Common Methods of Fixing Gears on Shafts

  • Key and Keyway Method: A key is inserted between the shaft and the gear hub to prevent relative rotation.
  • Splined Shaft: Splines provide multiple key-like projections that ensure strong torque transmission.
  • Set Screws: Screws are used to hold the gear firmly on the shaft.
  • Press Fit: The gear is pressed onto the shaft to create a tight interference fit.
  • Taper Fit: A tapered shaft and hub ensure secure mounting of the gear.

General Causes of Wear and Tear of Toothed Wheels

Gear teeth may wear out during operation due to various mechanical and environmental factors.

Common Causes

  • Improper lubrication.
  • Excessive load on gears.
  • Poor alignment of gears.
  • Dust and foreign particles.
  • Incorrect gear material or heat treatment.
  • Overheating during operation.

Remedies

  • Ensure proper lubrication of gears.
  • Maintain correct alignment of gear shafts.
  • Use proper materials and heat treatment.
  • Keep gears clean and free from dust.
  • Avoid overloading the gear system.
  • Inspect gears regularly for wear.

Method of Fitting Various Types of Gears

Fitting of Spiral Gears

Spiral gears must be aligned accurately to ensure smooth engagement of curved teeth. Proper lubrication and correct positioning are essential for efficient operation.

Fitting of Helical Gears

Helical gears are mounted carefully to maintain proper tooth alignment and contact. Bearings are used to support axial thrust generated during operation.

Fitting of Bevel Gears

Bevel gears are fitted on shafts that intersect at an angle, usually 90°. Correct alignment of the pitch cones is necessary for smooth power transmission.

Fitting of Worm and Worm Wheel

In worm gear systems, the worm and worm wheel must be aligned properly to maintain smooth meshing. Adequate lubrication is required to reduce friction and heat.

Care and Maintenance of Gears

Proper care and maintenance help increase the service life and efficiency of gears.

Maintenance Practices

  • Provide adequate lubrication to reduce friction.
  • Inspect gears regularly for wear or damage.
  • Maintain correct alignment of shafts.
  • Protect gears from dust and contamination.
  • Avoid overloading the gear mechanism.
  • Replace worn or damaged gears promptly.

Conclusion

Proper fixing, alignment, and maintenance of geared wheels are essential for efficient power transmission in mechanical systems. Regular inspection and lubrication help prevent wear and tear, ensuring smooth operation and long service life of gears.
