ITI Fitter is a 2-year technical vocational course (CTS) focusing on fitting, assembling, and maintaining industrial machinery and metal parts. Drilling Jig

Introduction

A drilling jig is a special device used in manufacturing to hold the workpiece and guide the cutting tool during drilling operations. The jig ensures accurate positioning of the drill and improves productivity in mass production.

Constructional Features of Drilling Jigs

  • Strong body made from cast iron or steel.
  • Jig plate or base for supporting the workpiece.
  • Clamping devices to hold the workpiece firmly.
  • Drill bushings to guide the drill accurately.
  • Locating pins or stops for correct positioning of the workpiece.

Types of Drilling Jigs

  • Plate Jig: A simple jig consisting of a flat plate with drill bushings used to guide the drill.
  • Channel Jig: A channel-shaped jig used for holding workpieces during drilling.
  • Leaf Jig: A jig with a hinged leaf or cover plate that allows easy loading and unloading of workpieces.
  • Box Jig: A box-shaped jig used to drill holes on multiple surfaces of the workpiece.
  • Indexing Jig: Used when holes must be drilled at different positions around a circular component.

Uses of Drilling Jigs

  • Guiding the drill accurately.
  • Increasing production efficiency.
  • Ensuring interchangeability of parts.

Fixtures

Introduction

A fixture is a work-holding device used to hold and locate a workpiece during machining operations. Unlike jigs, fixtures do not guide the cutting tool but only hold the workpiece securely.

Constructional Features of Fixtures

  • Rigid body made from cast iron or steel.
  • Locating devices to position the workpiece accurately.
  • Clamping devices to hold the workpiece firmly.
  • Base plate for mounting on machine tables.
  • Provision for easy loading and unloading of components.

Types of Fixtures

  • Milling Fixture: Used for holding workpieces during milling operations.
  • Turning Fixture: Used for holding workpieces during turning operations.
  • Grinding Fixture: Used for supporting parts during grinding.
  • Assembly Fixture: Used for assembling machine components accurately.

Uses of Fixtures

  • Holding workpieces securely during machining.
  • Ensuring accurate positioning of components.
  • Improving production efficiency.
  • Reducing operator fatigue and setup time.
